Who needs that PC rubbish -Moan-sweeper or -Slow-itaire?...
Welcome To WB-Hexx!
Firstly, THANKS FOR REGISTERING!
Some of you out there may have seen a version of this in an issue of Amiga
User International (sadly, RIP) a while back. Actually, that version was also
by me and was just called Hexx. (It was April 1996 on page 10 and there were
some other games written by me as well! :) I may do versions of those games
for the WB, but ONLY if you lot tell me to.
Startup...
----------
When you load WB-Hexx one of six things can happen:
1) You get a small window telling you that the program cannot initialise
the ReqTools library...
WB-Hexx requires the ReqTools.library file in your current LIBS: assign.
2) You get a nice ReqTools requester saying your Workbench hasn't enough
colours...
WB-Hexx needs at least 8 colours (preferably in the MagicWB palette :)
to look neat. Change your screenmode.
3) You get another nice ReqTools requester saying your workbench screen is
too small...
WB-Hexx needs a screen size of at least 640x512. Change your screen
size. I use 'DblPal:HiRes No Flicker' on my monitor.
4) You see a ReqTools requester saying that the program cannot find the GFX
file...
Included in this release is a file called 'WB-Hexx.GFX'. It's a data
file for the graphics. It must be located in the same directory as the
main program file. Note my use of the PROGDIR: directive in the programs
icon. This MUST NOT be changed or you won't see any graphics!
5) You see another requester saying that WB-Hexx cannot find the Keyfile...
As this is a registered version of WB-Hexx, I have included a small text
Keyfile. This unlocks the editor in version 1.1 (this version). If the
Keyfile is not located in PROGDIR: (see above), then you cannot play the
game. The file is called 'WB-Hexx.Keyfile'. If it has been corrupted or
tampered with, WB-Hexx will not recognise it, and will not continue
loading. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED - NO NOT MESS WITH IT!
6) You see a lovely ReqTools requester showing you what the program is...
This is the About requester and means that everything is OK. Click on
the 'Continue' button and then...
Destructions...
---------------
WB-Hexx displays a grid of 229 hexagons. There is one pink, one blue and
one black hexagon already on the board. You will also see three gadgets on
the right-hand side of the window. They are:
1) NEW! - Press this to start a new game;
2) QUIT - Press this to quit a game in progress. To quit WB-Hexx use the
close gadget in the top-left of the window;
3) EDITOR - Press this to use the board editor. Read 'Editing The Board'.
OK, click on the 'NEW!' gadget. The board will clear and the scores will be
reset to one. This is the number of pieces each player already has on the
board. It's only fair. The black hexagon in the middle is a Black Hole. You
cannot put any pieces of your colour onto that space... ever.
First to play is Player 1 (pink pieces). Click on your pink piece once with
the left mouse button (LMB). you will see a ring of up to six blue hexagons
and a larger ring of up to 12 pink hexagons, surrounding your piece. Any space
which already has a piece in it will not be highlighted. If you chose the wrong
piece, then click on any unhighlighted and empty space (the black hole is the
easiest). Choose your move and click on the space. The blue ones will
duplicate your piece, while the pink ones will move your piece. By choosing to
duplicate your piece, you are actually increasing your score by one point. But
by moving your piece, your score remains the same, until this...
When you have made your move, any pieces of the other players which touch
your new piece will be changed into yours! This is also how you increase your
score. For example:
_ _
_/ \_ _/ \_
/1\_/2\ /1\_/1\
\_/ \_/ If player 1 DUPLICATES into \_/1\_/ Player two's pieces become
/ \_/2\ the space in the middle.... / \_/1\ player one's and he keeps
\_/2\_/ \_/1\_/ the space he came from.
\_/ \_/
_ _
_/2\_ _/ \_
/1\_/ \ /1\_/ \
\_/1\_/ If player 2 MOVES into the \_/2\_/ Player one's pieces become
/ \_/1\ space at the bottom then.. / \_/2\ player two's, but he loses
\_/ \_/ \_/2\_/ the space he came from.
\_/ \_/
Get it? If not, then just play the game, you'll soon understand!
If you have accidentally clicked on the other players piece, you will be
shown a small message in the box underneath the board. This will also appear
if you have tried to move into a Black Hole, or if you already occupy the space
you want to move into.
Bonus Hexagons...
-----------------
If you see a message underneath the board saying 'BONUS HEXAGON!' then you
have unearthed one of a maximum of 15 bonus hexagons... well done! There are
currently four bonuses in this version:
1) EXPLODE - This bonus will make every space around your piece into your
colour. It changes all 6 immediately touching the space, and
the 12 surrounding those spaces, i.e:
_ _
_/ \_ Player moved from space 1 into space *. _/1\_
_/ \_/ \_ Space 1 is left empty. All the others _/1\_/1\_
/1\_/ \_/ \ are filled with player's pieces, except /1\_/1\_/1\
\_/ \_/ \_/ the centre which is also empty. \_/1\_/1\_/
/ \_/*\_/ \ /1\_/ \_/1\
\_/ \_/ \_/ NOTE: Does not affect any Black Holes. \_/1\_/1\_/
/ \_/ \_/ \ /1\_/1\_/1\
\_/ \_/ \_/ \_/1\_/1\_/
\_/ \_/ \_/1\_/
\_/ \_/
2) IMPLODE - Same as above, but all the spaces are cleared, and the centre
is changed to your colour. NOTE: Does not affect any Black
Holes.
3) LINE FILL - This one will make every space in a horizontal line into your
colour. NOTE: Does not affect any Black Holes.
4) COLLAPSING STAR - This is a real pain in the butt. If you find a bonus
of this type, your piece is put into the centre of a
star formation of Black Holes! Remember, Black Holes
cannot be removed by any means! They are there for the
duration of the game.
Winner!...?
-----------
The winner is chosen in one of three ways:
1) The board is filled with pieces and the player with the highest score
wins;
2) The board is filled with pieces and the scores are equal. Nobody wins.
It's a stalemate;
3) A player completely surrounds the other player, meaning they cannot move
any of their pieces - the player who can move is the winner, regardless
of the scores.
Editing The Board...
--------------------
When you click on the 'Editor' button in the main window, you'll see a large
requester showing you how to use the editor. Click on the 'Thanks!' button and
a smaller window will appear to the right of the main window. It has four new
buttons in it:
1) FINISHED - Click this when you have finished editing the board. WB-Hexx
will perform a series of tests to see if there are any errors
in your new design, such as a player not being able to move,
or there being no pieces for a certain player. You will then
be asked if you want to 'Accept' the new board layout, 'Edit
Some More' if you want to continue editing, or 'Revert To
Original' to go back to the original board layout. Choose the
appropriate button.
2) CLEAR! - This will ask if you really want to clear the board. If you
do, then click on the 'Yes' button. If not, click the 'No!'
button.
3) PRESET - This will show you a requester asking which of the 7 preset
boards you want to use/edit. Either choose a number from 1 to
7, or click the 'Cancel' button to erm.. cancel. The first
preset is the board that WB-Hexx loads up with.
4) HELP - Click this button to display the Helpscreen again. Note that
you MUST click the 'Thanks!' button to continue. Do not try
to keep the Helpscreen window open or put it to the back.
Well, that's the gadgets dealt with. Now, how do you change the pieces that
are in the board? Simple, just type in the number of the hexagon... sorry, I
couldn't be that cruel! All you do is click with the Left Mouse Button in the
hexagon you want to change. The pieces rotate in the following order:
> Clear > Player One (Pink) > Player Two (Blue) > Black Hole > Clear...etc.
That's all there is to it. Nothing else to explain. It is too simple.
Have fun with the editor. It took me about 6 hours of solid coding to get it
just right. I had to zap quite a few bugs that kept arising :(
========== ========== ========== ==========
Greets...
---------
Nico Francois for creating the ReqTools library. Cheers!
Can I take a moment to apologise to Phil Townsend. Phil, I got your letter
about Blocks and C-Light, thanks for liking my games. I'm sorry that I haven't
replied to you, but I actually lost your address! If you buy Amiga Format,
then look out for the WB versions of Blocks and Colony - coming soon? Write me.
Thanks must also go to Danny Mayberry for being the first to send me a CD
single for liking FLister V1.0. Anyone else got a trashy CD single they need
to get rid of? Remember, ALL my new software is CD-Single-Ware! Read the
"About" statement at the start of my programs. BTW Danny, how's your PD
business doing? Good idea! Best of luck with it!
Bugs...
-------
As you can imagine, with there being 229 hexagons in the grid, I may have
made an error somewhere. If you have found a bug, then write me. I'll do my
best to sort it out. I have tested it myself, but they can crop up anywhere.
